UCI Para-Cycling Road World Cup 2018

This year it is the ninth time that the UCI Para-Cycling Road World Cup is being held. After the Paralympic Games and the World Championships, it is the most important competition for cyclists with a disability. The World Cup this year consists of three races. Apart from this weekend in Ostend and from 6 to 8 July in Emmen there will also be a race in the Canadian town of Baie-Comeau at the end of August (15-19 August).

Routes time trial and road race

In Ostend cyclists are presented with a similar route as last year. The time trials are held on a course across the Zeekdijk, close to the Belgian North Sea coast. Because of its location by the sea, the wind can play a decisive role in the time trials. The course for the time trials is about 9 kilometers long. The road races on Saturday and Sunday take place in Mariakerke, on the east side of Ostend.

Participating countries and favorites

The participants of the World Cup in Ostend this year consists of more than 300 participants from no less than 38 countries. With the presence of almost the entire world top, several beautiful clashes can be expected in Ostend. Dutchman Tim de Vries, for example, faces his eternal rival Alessandro Zanardi from Italy in the MH5-class for the first time this year. It is also interesting to see if the Dutch tandems, including Paralympic champions Vincent ter Schure and Timo Fransen, are strong enough to beat the British duos, which during the 2018 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in March proved to be unbeatable.
