Great-Britain tops medal table Para-cycling 2018

See you in The Netherlands next year!

The British para-cycling team have finished first in the medal table at the UCI Para-cycling World Championships. With eleven gold, four silver and tree bronze medals they did an impressive job at the former Olympic track in Rio de Janeiro. The Netherlands became second, just before the Chinese team. Next year the para-cycling track worlds will take place in The Netherlands.

Clean sweep for British tandems

In particular at the tandem the British teams turned out to be unbeatable. The British teams even managed to remain undefeated, beating among others strong competitors from Belgium (Women’s B Griet Hoet and Anneleen Monsieur), The Netherlands (Men’s B Tristan Bangma and Patrick Bos) and Spain (Men’s B Ignacio Avila Rodriguez and Joan Bertoli).Thanks in part to a silver medal by the Spanish tandem couplet he Spanish team ended just ended just outside the top 3 of the medal table at the 2018 UCI Para-cycling World Championships. Colombia concluded the top five of the medal table.

Great end to a great tournament

At the final day of the World Championships Lauro Chaman provided the Brazilian fans a fantastic end to a great tournament, by winning the first and only gold medal for the hosting country. At the 15 km scratch he secured to cross the line just before Australia’s Alistair Donohoe. It was one of the highlights of the championships, besides the several world records that were set and the great atmosphere among athletes and fans in the Voldromo Municipal do Rio.

UCI Para-cyling World Championships 2019

The next para-cycling world championships will be hosted in The Netherlands. First the 2019 Para-cycling Track World Championships in Apeldoorn (March 14-17) and later the year the road race as well. Emmen, two times organizer of a Para-cycling road World Cup – last year and this year as well, from July 6 until July 8 – is hosting the UCI Para Cycling Road World Championships in September 2019 (September 12-15).
